Hutt International Boys’ School is a finalist in the 2016 NZ Property Council Awards for their Maths and Humanities and Commerce block.
‘Building a future’ is a highly apt way to describe the journey that Hutt International Boys’ School (HIBS) has taken with its students to bring them the best in modern learning environments to help boys learn, grow and excel.
The requirement was for an innovative design solution for a new two storey Maths Block and a Humanities and Commerce Block on a smaller footprint. The new Maths Block commands a prominent position at the frontage to the School and complements the Administration Block and Auditorium designed by Designgroup Stapleton Elliott. This project embodied a highly engaged School community and a collaborative project team with The Building Intelligence Group as project managers, architects DGSE, Hawkins Construction, Kevin O’Connor and Associates.
This project embodied a requirement for long term flexibility and inevitable change in use over time so flexible learning spaces abound and open into shared communal zones to provide a multitude of teaching environments and educational delivery opportunities.
Cost control was an essential ingredient. TBIG led a competitive procurement process which resulted in a very competitive outcome for the School. Tight cost control brought the project in under budget which enabled HIBS to benefit from some design enhancements to external areas where a relaxing courtyard area with astroturf, external furniture and a chess board was created.
Principal Mike Hutchins comments “The teaching spaces have an excellent atmosphere for learning, with the sound, light and air control throughout the buildings being of an extremely high standard. It is pleasing to see teachers and students making the most of their new, flexible teaching environments.” “This was the first major build which I have been involved with and I was impressed with the attitude and professionalism of all involved.”
