The new purpose built 3,000m2 Archives facility in Wigram will ensure that important material and records that Christchurch Archives has been entrusted with will be preserved in highly secure and environmentally controlled premises for the future.
The location for the new Archives facility in Christchurch is on a Crown-owned New Zealand Defence Force site in Wigram. The Department of Internal Affairs led project includes a purpose-built storage facility and offices and carparking. The key drivers for the facility are security, environmental controls with minimised energy use, flexibility for future expansion and achievement of a facility in accordance with the New Archives Standards as an approved repository.
The Building Intelligence Group was selected as project managers, reflecting our past experience in Archives facilities. Our role centred on understanding and helping define a site specific and performance brief to ensure that DIA’s requirements would be fully met. The Building Intelligence Group’s scope of service includes design management, procurement of contractors, programme and construction management.
The new 3,000m2 archives facility includes a large temperature and humidity controlled storage stack area, requiring 20,000 lineal metres of specialised shelving. Construction began on the archives facility in mid-2017, and the facility will open in the third quarter of 2018.
