Take a bird’s eye view through the new Wakatipu high school

The Building Intelligence Group was engaged by the Ministry of Education to assist in the delivery of Wakatipu High School in Queenstown, the last of four new schools within the Public Private Partnership 2 Package (PPP2).

The Wakatipu High School project was the first of its kind in New Zealand; an existing traditional model school moving to a new ILE model. The new 10,000m2 sate of the art school at Remarkables Park  opened its doors in February 2018 for the first day of Term 1, greeting students with exciting and innovative spaces including a large theatre, dance and recording studio, purpose built automotive space, large gym and rock climbing wall, science labs and technology spaces, a teaching kitchen and café.

The Building Intelligence Group’s (TBIG) role consisted of acting as the Ministry representative, engaging with both the Consortium representatives and the School to ensure a smooth run in to the completion of the project. Our engagement came at a critical juncture of the project, with eight months remaining and with a number of significant design items to resolve. TBIG were able to steer the School through a number of processes which were new environments for the School Senior Leadership Team (SLT), notably moving to an ILE environment, developing a brand new school facility and the PPP process itself. Momentum then swung to co-ordinating a successful moving process. The new Wakatipu High School was handed over on schedule on 22 December 2017. http://www.wakatipu.school.nz/

Following the success of Wakatipu School, TBIG have again been engaged by the Ministry to provide the same scope of services for the PPP3 co-located secondary school campus in Christchurch (Avonside Girls and Shirley Boys High Schools, as well as a Ferndale Special Education Satellite Unit).  This approx. 22,000m2 facility is due to open its doors in time for the start of term 2, April 2019. Again breaking new territory, this is the first of its kind in New Zealand combining two single sex Schools onto one campus.
