Construction of the Johnsonville Community Hub is almost underway. As lead consultant, The Building Intelligence Group is excited to help bring Wellington City Council and this northern community’s vision to life.
The new facility will provide a focal point for the community, integrating a new Library and Community Hub, café and kindergarten. Connections and community are key themes, and the hub will be integrated with a new entrance to the Keith Spry Pool and will provide a strong connection between Memorial Park and the town centre.
Designed by Athfield Architects, and to be constructed by Southbase Construction, the new two-level library will comprise a series of loosely defined zones that are innovative and exciting – creating a journey of discovery as people move through the library’s unique spaces which include a makerspace, young people’s zone, children’s zone, a terraced performance space, café and courtyard.
“I’m excited that we will break ground on this project in January. The new facilities will sit at the heart of Johnsonville and revitalise the area for youth, families and adults,” says Jill Day, Deputy Mayor and portfolio leader for Libraries, and Children and Young People.
The first stage of construction involves demolition of the Youth Room at the southern end of the Johnsonville Community centre. The project’s second stage will involve building the new library, relocating the pool entrance, connecting it to the library through a covered pedestrian route, and building a café and kindergarten. The third stage is the completion of landscaping and car parking space.
The project is scheduled to open in December 2019.
